Information of General Interest of the Country

Some relevant facts about Chile:

Stretching between the Cordillera de los Andes and the Pacific Ocean, Chile is the longest and thinnest country in the world. In addition to sharing borders with Argentina, Peru and Bolivia, Chile also has territories in Polynesia and Antarctica, making it a tri-continental nation.

  • Official language: Spanish.
  • Weather: The climate of Santiago resembles that of the Mediterranean, with long dry summers and short, temperate winters. In the season of the year in which the IV Forum will take place, it will be summer (occurring between the months of December and March), it is dry and hot (maximum temperatures between 30 and 35°C). At night it is pleasantly refreshing and rarely rains.
  • Time zone: UTC/GMT minus 3 hours.
  • Currency: The national currency is the Chilean Peso (CLP), which uses the symbol $, with coins that are equivalent to 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 pesos, and also bills of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos. As of 12th February, 1 US dollar equates to 598 Chilean pesos.
  • Money: For general trade dollars and euros are not accepted, and so it is convenient to convert foreign currency Chilean pesos. This is best done in established offices where the exchange rate will usually be lower. In Santiago there are several exchange houses in Agustinas street between Ahumada and Bandera (open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday mornings). Others are close to the metro stations Manuel Montt, Pedro de Valdivia, and Los Leones. Exchange offices at the airport have less convenient rates. The best way to obtain money in pesos in most cities of the country is with your bank card or with your credit card from Redbanc ATMs (maximum per withdrawal of 200,000.00 CLP per day), and for which machines must display Cirrus, Plus or Maestro symbols. Your bank will charge a commission for each transaction (find out before you leave). Traveller’s checks are infrequently accepted.
  • Credit cards: You can use credit cards in many shops, supermarkets, stores, restaurants, etc. Only some travel agencies and large hotels will receive dollars or euros directly.
  • Tipping: In restaurants the suggested amount is 10% of the total bill, although it is optional and not typically included in the bill. It is customary to receive all the return first, and then leave the tip on the table. Tipping is not used for taxi drivers.
  • Electricity: The voltage in Chile is 220 V / 50 Hz. If your electrical appliances need an adapter, they can easily be found in supermarkets or hardware stores.
  • Dress code: Light clothing is recommended for outside; although the air conditioning in the meeting rooms and bedrooms can be cold.
  • Health: Chile it is not exposed to any particular health hazard, and therefore no special vaccination is required. However, it is recommended to protect against typhoid fever, poliomyelitis, hepatitis and tetanus. If you travel to rural areas within Chile, the rabies vaccine may be useful. Those who come from an area of yellow fever must have the necessary vaccine to visit Easter Island.
  • Medical attention: The clinics in Santiago and other large cities of Chile are at the level of the developed countries. However, getting the same medical attention in rural areas or emergency hospitals can be more difficult. Before traveling to Chile, check if your health insurance has international coverage, or obtain additional insurance. Private clinics accept credit cards as collateral. There is a good network of pharmacies where you will find any medication you need.
